My dad plays guitar and is one of those guys who can tell you the name of the artist and the song title (and the album it was on) just by hearing the opening drum beat of a song. I tend to take after him.

I’m the girl who got really excited when I found out the band America was coming to this cool old theatre this winter and, because they performed the theme song for The Last Unicorn and one of their big hits in the ’80’s was You Can Do Magic, it got me thinking about other pop/rock songs that talk about magic or other nerdy things (without delving into purposeful parody).

I’m about to bust out on vacation for a week and I’ve had a rough week so this seems like the perfect time to geek out about music a little bit. I find it relaxing. 🙂 Hopefully, I’m leaving you guys on a pleasant little musical high for a week or so…. or maybe you’ll just think I have awful taste in music.

Who doesn't miss music videos from the '80's?

Who doesn’t miss music videos from the ’80’s when they have awesome shots like this?

She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby

This is a really rad live version. Thomas Dolby is like a mad scientist of music and he clearly enjoys the act. And this is a pretty damn nerdy pop hit of the ’80’s

Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades by Timbuk3

A song about nuclear holocaust. That’s rather geeky… and kind of depressing.

Warrior by Mark Foster, A-Trak, & Kimbra

The song itself isn’t super nerdy but the collaboration came together because of Converse (just look at the shoes all over this video) and the music video is full of imagery of luchadores and wrestling ala WWE style and it’s pretty awesome.

1985 by Bowling For Soup

I love this music video. It’s a nostalgic trip down music video memory lane for me and the song is catchy as hell. And if a love of music pop culture like this isn’t geeky, I dunno what is.

Beauty & The Beast – Celine Dion & Peabo Bryson

Seriously. Would someone explain to me why this was on the damn radio and charting? This was the first Disney movie that Disney turned on the hyperdrive of its massive marketing machine. I was working in a video store at the time & I still shudder to think about it.

You Can Do Magic by America

The song that got my mind reeling. This is a great live version from about 8 years ago. I’ve seen them live more recently and they really do sound awesome.

I know there are a million other songs out there that I’m forgetting. What are some of your favorite geeky videos or songs not made by a parody artist?
